President's Corner
by Sue
Greetings, and welcome to a brand new year of making great music!
Last year was a great one for the CCB, and this year promises to be even
better.
With the completion of the demo tape and the new brochure, we are hoping to
make more contacts and gain a few extra paying jobs for the band.
The big news this year is our Pops Concert, which is scheduled for April 25th.
This is our big chance to pull together and work toward a common goal.
It's up to us, folks.
We are hoping to raise about $1,500 with this gig, possibly more.
To do this, we need everybody's help.
Committees have been formed, and board members will be approaching people to
help.
The more time and effort we put into this, the better the outcome for the band.
We've got a sizeable "wish list" for 1999.
Among the things we'd like to get for the band are: New folders to replace
those old dilapidated "things" most of us are carrying around now, and lots
of new music to put in those folders.
We'd also like to buy flip folders for march music for when we do the
parade(s).
That way the march music will always be ready and available.
We are looking into new speakers for the outdoor concerts.
With an annual operating budget of about $5,000, we're not going to get very
far (and that total includes what we collected at rehearsals in our own
donation drum every week).
We want the band to be a fun and positive experience for everyone.
It's your band and we need everyone's help to set the direction of the group.
Your suggestions and comments are always welcome and encouraged.
See me or one of the board members at rehearsal, or Email me at smg@mitre.org.
Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!

Personnelly Speaking

Did you know we have section leaders? Their job is to make sure that all parts of a piece are covered during rehearsals and performances and fairly and equitably assign chairs.
If you don't know yours, here they are:
Flutes: Bill Ackerman
Clarinets: Craig Meyer
Oboe/Bassoon/Bass Clarinet: Vanessa Rene
Saxes: Rob Granville
Horns/Percussion: Sue Guillemette
Trumpets: Jerry Hardy
Trombones/Basses/Baritone: Ange Ortolano
Band-Aid

Did you know that aside from concert revenue, fundraising and drum donations
at the summer concert series (and most recently, the band drum at rehearsals)
are the only sources of income to maintain the CCB organization?
A few years back, I was asked to help with fundraising efforts.
I agreed, and set out to solicit area businesses for cash and raffle prizes
to support our summer Concert on the Common series.
The response for my efforts was fair and I proceeded to create summer
programs, a tedious task.
Why do I share this with you? Because IT TAKES A VILLAGE (i.e., I need your
help).
This year, I proposed that the April 25th concert be the major fundraising
effort.
We will create a program and, again, solicit cash and raffle prizes.
This will be the only fundraising event for this year.
And I can't do it alone.
If every one of the band members solicited 1 - JUST ONE - business, that
would be 60 more contacts than I can make in my spare time.
What do these contributions fund?
For starters... our directors, new music, music clips, truck rentals, signage,
fundraising expenses (postage, stationery) and the list goes on.
Most recently you participated in a recording of the band.
That effort was due to a number of band members who donated their time and
money.
A brochure for the band is also underway, with graphics design and layout
donated by a co-worker of mine.
Together with the recording, we can open doors for more performing
opportunities.

Okay, I'll get to the point... please see me if you can make a call.
At the very least, check with your place of employment.
They often have funds committed to organizations such as ours.
I am proud to be part of this organization and am driven by the vision to
have it continue and GROW into a 27th and 28th year and beyond.
Thanks and don't be shy to ask for money.
The worst response will be NO!
Money Matters

First of all, I apologize for the math error in the annual report.
The total as of 12/31/98 was $2,924.88.
Next, I want to point out to all the wonderful contributions you've been
making in the trusty old drum during weekly rehearsals.
We had over $600 from the band last year and over $180 during January of this
year alone.
Keep it up!
The drum should be in the back of the rehearsal hall to make
it easy as you leave.
Sort of like leaving church ...
All That Jazz

In preparation for the April 25th concert, the Jazz ensemble will rehearse on
Tuesday, February 23rd.
That means you get a reprieve from attending rehearsal (but we know that you
will practice at home).
Also mark March 30th for a stay-at-home solo practice as the Jazz band
prepares for a Spring Fling performance.
There may be one additional.
We'll let you know.
Music Trivia

Did you know that the saxophone was invented in Paris in the 1840's by a
Belgian named Adolphe Sax?
Do you know which flavor of the saxophone he first built?
